Rehabilitation of 9th Street
Bridge over I-395
The 9th Street Bridge over I-395 was in need of rehabilitation and repair. To extend the life and increase the safety of this 5-span, steel structure with concrete decks, Volkert Engineering revised an out-of-date set of construction documents to reflect current AASHTO and DDOT standards and a new scope-of-services.
The project involved a field inspection; evaluations of the 9th Street bridge decks, structural steel on ramps, and the paint system for the steel girders and railings; on-site cleaning; environmental testing; and rehabilitation and repair design.
Rehabilitation plans for the 9th Street Bridge included complete deck replacements, substructure repairs, rehabilitation of the ramps, the cleaning and painting of steel girders, and replacement and upgrade of 26 lights and under-bridge lighting. The plans also included emergency repairs to the steel girders on the 10th Street Bridge.
In addition, Volkert Engineering designed plans for roadway and drainage improvements. Other services included pavement marking and maintenance of traffic plans; the replacement of a water line; the rehabilitation plans of the underground TSA traffic control room; a new stairway, the rehabilitation of an existing stairway, and the replacement of a sidewalk reserved for egress of pedestrians during emergency evacuations.
