Cady's alley
Volkert provided engineering design to preserve and restore the character of several historic alleys in various locations throughout the District. One of the signature projects was the restoration of Cady’s Alley in Historic Georgetown. Volkert worked on behalf of DDOT with the developer of the project to restore the area to its former stature.
In total, Volkert assisted the City in reconstruction of 55 historic alleys, in areas including Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Mount Pleasant and Capitol Hill. Volkert provided survey, design, construction documents, and construction phase services for this three-year restoration effort.
Volkert’s design restored the neglected alleys to their original conditions. Materials used in the alleys included aphalt block pavers, yellow and red pavers, cobblestone pavers and pressed concrete block. The design required coordination with several agencies. All renovations in the historic districts were designed in accordance with the District’s historic preservation construction standards.
The alley lighting design provided by Volkert consisted of fixture upgrades, conduit, cabling and wiring design for power supply. Field surveys were conducted to verify existing conditions and features that affect alley lighting design. The project involved coordination with underground utility companies. Volkert’s design included new manholes, conduit, cable, trunk line connections, and construction sequencing.
Maintenance of traffic plans required temporary signs and channelization devices to maintain a safe flow of traffic throughout construction of the improvements.
