french park
Volkert Engineering worked with the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to transform a small deteriorated park into a valuable neighborhood asset that incorporated architectural details complementing the historical character of the neighborhood, habitat creation for the migratory Monarch Butterfly, and green infrastructure supporting stormwater management.
The site is located within the Greater U Street Historic District and is surrounded by a neighborhood actively involved in the revitalization of its public park. The goal was to create a multi-purpose open space that would provide passive recreation, as well as stormwater management reducing the impact on the District’s combined sewer system. A reservoir under the permeable pavement holds the water on-site and slows down the runoff entering the District’s aging combined sewer system.
The park immensely improves the quality of life for the local community, and will be part of the overall solution for cleaning up the Anacostia River as green infrastructure is further integrated into multi-purpose projects in Washington DC.
