howard theatre restoration
In February 2012, DDOT began the reconstruction of the roadways around the historic Howard Theatre in the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest DC. The road construction project coincides with the restoration of the national landmark which was built in 1910 and helped launch the careers of many famous performers including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, and the Supremes.
The project involved construction of the new Ellington Plaza area, roadway reconstruction and streetscape work on T Street, from 7th Street to Florida Avenue, and on Wiltberger Street, from T Street to S Street. Work also occurred in the two alleys west of and behind Howard Theatre and the alley between Florida Avenue and T Street. Construction was finished May 2012.
