Pennsylvania avenue
The reconstruction of Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E. was part of the Great Streets Initiative, a comprehensive strategy to transform under-invested corridors into thriving and inviting neighborhood centers. Volkert provided construction management services for this $30-million project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
This 1.8-mile, multi-modal project involved roadway reconstruction and streetscape improvements, new sidewalks and new street lighting on both sides of the street for the full length of the project to enhance safety, special treatments to create a distinct appearance in the commercial areas and pedestrian-friendly shopping areas, a landscaped median, new crosswalks, and improved signal and traffic management. Bioretention cells and water quality catch basins capture treat stormwater runoff to protect the Anacostia River.
