Shepherd field
Volkert transformed Shepherd Field by designing a park that accommodates the changing recreational needs of the surrounding community. Located near the District's northern boundary, the park is a popular destination for locals, as well as people from Maryland and Virginia.
The new park is now ADA accessible and has better connections to the community. The U-12 smaller soccer field, located in the center of the park, features a perimeter walking track and separates a new adult exercise area and the two new playgrounds. On-site stormwater management is possible by taking advantage of the existing sandy subsoil which allows runoff infiltration into the synthetic turf and the rubber surfacing subsurfaces.
The new 2 to 5 years old and 5 to 12 years old playgrounds promote social interaction and developmental play. Play elements were selected to stimulate gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and sensory motor functions. The structures selected and the layout of these elements was carefully considered to create a series of experiences that encourages children to play with a purpose and an emphasis to strengthen social and physical development.
